BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARTY MARKOWITZ HELPS BROOKLYN KILL-A-WATT
Brooklyn, NY – July 16, 2007 — Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced that he is encouraging Brooklyn residents and all New Yorkers to take proactive steps to prevent costly blackouts and brownouts. In an open letter to eligible Brooklyn neighborhoods, Markowitz officially threw his support behind the energy saving initiative, Operation Kill-A-Watt.
Public Energy Solutions (PES) is a regionally recognized lighting and energy services management company that through Operation Kill-A-Watt helps Brooklyn residents and business owners in designated zip codes achieve energy cost savings by providing FREE or low cost energy efficient upgrades. PES has been contracted by Con Edison to reduce energy usage in targeted areas all over New York City. Brooklyn residents must act now as Operation Kill-A-Watt is only available in the borough until August 31, 2007.
Awareness surrounding New York City’s sustainability has been greatly heightened in the last several months due to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC and GreeNYC plans calling on all New Yorkers to curb their energy usage. With Markowitz’s endorsement, hundreds more are expected to join the nearly 2,000 businesses that have already taken advantage of the program. Operation Kill-A-Watt helped city businesses retain over $5 million in energy costs annually and has removed over 42 million pounds of CO2 emissions in the last year.
“Here at Borough Hall, we have worked closely with Public Energy Solutions to provide Brooklyn residents with a no obligation energy assessment of lighting energy usage and ways to save on rising electric bills, “ said Markowitz in his letter. “Brooklyn has always led New York City in developing innovative approaches to pressing problems. Now we will be the leader in supporting the City’s efforts to reduce the damaging effects of global warming.”
“There is still so much to be done when it comes to lowering the amount of energy consumed in Brooklyn,” said Keith Hartman, president of Public Energy Solutions. “We commend Borough President Markowitz for spreading the word about the opportunities for energy savings and reduced emissions available through Operation Kill-A-Watt.”
Buildings in designated zip codes of Brooklyn that are currently using 25 or more incandescent light bulbs in their buildings can sign up to receive Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), T8 fluorescent lamps and other energy efficient fixtures for little or no cost through Operation Kill-A-Watt (table lamps are excluded). Compared to incandescent light bulbs, CFLs consume up to 80 percent less energy and last 10 times longer. Other lighting and energy efficient technologies are also provided through the program, which is additionally available to Con Edison customers in Queens and Westchester County.
